When to use each

The scrubber comes out when there's stuck food or the surface feels rough. Rinse the pan under hot water, scrub in a few circles, and food lifts off without soap or soaking. If a pan has picked up a little orange rust from sitting wet, the chainmail knocks it back to bare metal in under a minute.

The wax comes out after cleaning, or whenever the pan starts looking dull or gray instead of glossy black. Warm the dry pan slightly, buff in a tiny amount of wax with a cloth, then wipe it back so it looks almost dry. That thin film is what keeps the surface non-stick and rust-free.

"But isn't cast-iron maintenance hard?"

This kit exists precisely because that fear keeps people away from cast iron, and it's mostly a myth. The whole routine after cooking is: wipe, rinse hot, dry, wipe with a little oil or wax. Thirty seconds. The scrubber handles the one genuinely annoying case — stuck food — and the wax handles the other — a tired-looking surface. With these two in the drawer there's no soaking, no scouring, no scrubbing a pan raw, and no reason to be afraid of rust. If you're gifting a skillet to someone new to cast iron, add this so their first month is easy.
