About Acme Outfitters
It started with a decade of bad pans
Dana Okafor cooked constantly and bought accordingly. Over about ten years she went through a drawer's worth of skillets — some warped the first time they met high heat, some showed up "pre-seasoned" but sticky and gray, and the nonstick ones eventually flaked their coating into the eggs. Every one of them ended the same way: in the trash, replaced by another pan that would also end in the trash.
At some point the math stopped making sense. She'd spent more on a decade of disposable cookware than a single good pan would have cost, and she had nothing to show for it. So she learned to cast iron herself.
The garage foundry
The first Acme skillets came out of a foundry Dana built in her garage — melting down recycled iron, pouring it into sand molds, grinding the cook surface smooth, and seasoning each pan by hand with flaxseed oil until it was slick and near-black. The early ones were heavy and a little rough. They also refused to die, which was the entire point.
We still cast from recycled iron. We still season by hand with flaxseed oil before anything ships. The garage got bigger, but the standard didn't move.
Our mission
Make cookware good enough that you never have to think about replacing it. We measure success in decades of use, not units sold. If you buy one skillet from us and use it for the rest of your life, we did our job.
The three values
- One product done right. We keep the line to four items on purpose. A skillet, a Dutch oven, a shared lid, and a care kit. When you're not spread across fifty SKUs, you can make each one excellent.
- Repair before replace. A rusted or rough pan is almost never dead. We'd rather you send it back for re-seasoning or repair than buy a new one. It's better for you and better than another pan in a landfill.
- Made to be handed down. Cast iron gets better with use and outlasts its owner. We build with that in mind — the pan you buy should be a pan your kid fights their sibling over someday.
How we talk
Plainly. We don't run countdown timers, invent scarcity, or tell you a deal ends at midnight. There's no midnight. If a pan is right for you, it'll still be right next week. We'll tell you when something isn't for you — if you want a lightweight pan you never have to maintain, cast iron is the wrong tool and we'll say so. We'd rather lose the sale than sell you the wrong thing.
Who we make this for
Home cooks who keep their tools for twenty years. People who fix things instead of tossing them. Folks who buy a gift once and mean it — a lot of our pans get bought in the winter as presents for someone who cooks. If you think of your kitchen as something you're building slowly and keeping, you're our person.
